was the one child policy successful

In light of the Omaha mall shooting, what do you think can be done to help young people not get to this point?
I have two sons in middle school. It is a far different world than 1976. The school puts so much pressure on them. Then there is the “zero tolerance” on comments, violence etc. Not saying this is bad, but among boys I remember guys just duking it out, no body got kicked out of school. I almost think that all the seriousness of these policies builds up the anger in kids. I dont remember anyone getting seriously hurt and more often the kids were friends again after the fist fight. Also the pressure to be academically successful. My one son came home crying at the beginning of the year from all the pressure. There is no treating the kids like kids, we are putting 15 year olds in court, for things like drinking, back in 1976, if the police caught boys out with alcohol they took them home to their folks and let the parents deal with them! which was pretty heavy handed at the time! I feel like we should open state psychiatric facilities that are now closed and less PRISONS for children.
The thing that strikes me about all of these cases, Columbine, this shooting, the Amish community massacre, Virginia Tech, etc., is that everyone remembers the killers. We all know Eric & Dylan killed the kids in Columbine. We know this guy’s name is Robert Hawkins. Now, without looking it up, name ONE victim of each of these shootings. Of ANY of these shootings, even. I bet, like myself, you can’t do it. The media puts so much attention on the killers, why they did it, how they did it, what kind of person they were, what their friends and families have to say about it, and the victims’ stories get lost in the rubble. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t wonder what would drive a person to do a thing like this, but the Omaha case shows that in some cases, people go on random shooting sprees for the fame and no other reason. This kid only wanted to kill himself. The only reason he went to the mall and opened fire was because he wanted to be famous. It’s so sad that in his final selfish moments on earth, he made the conscious decision to take the lives of 8 people rather than just kill himself.
