successful campaigning

Why was Martin Luther King more successful in campaigning for rights for blacks in the Southern states?
I’ve only got two points so far, and I’ve read my textbookbs through and through /:
- Religion – he was of Christian faith and many Northern blacks weren’t, so less respect/success.
- Less known in the North – in the South he was seen as an ‘idol’ to many, but when he moved to improve Northern black standards, he didn’t get the same amount of recognition.
I need at least three or four more points, so if you could think of any, that’d be grand (:

I’ve literally looked at the book for so long and been on the internet, only to no avail ;/ this is kind of my last resort.
Racial discrimination was more acutely felt in the south – the Plessy vs Ferguson Supreme Court ruling had allowed discrimination in education – as long as States offered the same level of facilities but kept blacks and whites apart then the SC adjudged this to be constitutional. In reality the facilities offered to black students was inferior to that offered to white students, that wasn’t such a problem in the north.
Blacks were barred from voting and civil participation they weren’t allowed to register let alone vote, again not such a problem in the north.
Inequality before the law, there were thousands of lynchings and acts of violence perpetrated against blacks by the KKK and whites. It was rare for the perpetrators to be arrested or tried or found guilty.
MLK had more success in the south because the contrast between black and white was far greater than in the north. MLK was also born in the south – in Atlanta, and his membership/leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference meant that he had a strong power base in the south. It also helped that some of his earliest victories – eg the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott were in the south and he was an ordained minister who preached in the south.
